Measurement of the Abdominal Aortic Diameter by Computed Tomography in Normal Korean Adults

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the normal diameter of the abdominal aorta by CT in korean adults without cardiovascular disease.
In 300 patients(20 to 69 years) who were without known cardiovascular disease, measurement of abdominal aortic diameter by CT were made at 3 sites; above the celiac trunk (A1), above the renal artery(A2) and above the aortic bifurcation(A3).
The mean age of 300 patients was 44.9¡¾14 years. The average diameter of the abdominal aorta wee 21.3¡¾3.1 mm above the celiac trunk(A1), 18.6¡¾2.5mm above the renal artery(A2) and 16.8¡¾2.4mm above the aortic bifurcation(A3). On the average the
men had
2mm larger diameter of the abdominal aorta than the women. With aging the mean diameters of the proximal, middle and distal abdominal aorta increased by 0.16mm, 0.12mm and 0.09mm/yr, respectively.
There is no significant difference in aortic diameters between korean adults and foreigners.
